I’m Alaina, a writer & New Yorker.

I've been a working reporter in New York for ten years. I’m currently a features writer at The Guardian covering youth culture, sex & dating, online communities, the aesthetics of the religious right, and what I affectionately call “girl stuff”. (Think: gen z’s surprising love for Billy Joel’s anti-hustle anthem Vienna, or this piece on young women wearing baggy “subway shirts” to deter creepy stares en transit.)

I’ve investigated the disgusting legality of child marriage in most US states, the untold dangers of Lasik surgery, and the rise in women seeking sterilization procedures after the reversal of Roe v. Wade.

Prior to The Guardian, I spent three years as The Daily Beast’s style writer. The pandemic hit during my time on that desk, and I pivoted to covering the many insanities of living in lockdown-era America. One of my biggest scoops answered a question I swear everyone was asking at the time: are former New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s nipples pierced? (They don’t all age well.)

Outside of work, I like tomato season, newspaper print in fashion, and scenes in movies where characters go to the movies. A recent trip through the Balkans left me very into Yugo boogie. I believe there are no bad covers of Love Is Strange. Sometimes I throw parties under the name dj polycool.

I live in Brooklyn with two cats named Vinny & Moog .
